Fall Basketball Starts Next Week

The hardest part of choosing a fall activity for your child isn’t finding one.

Meadowvale Theatre is turning its open house into a hands-on family afternoon. Kids can do a theatre scavenger hunt, stop at a craft station, pose for photos on the stage, listen to live music and meet artists connected to upcoming shows. There will also be a fire truck outside and free ice cream while quantities last.

Go if you want a free Sunday plan in the west end that does not need much planning. It gives families a reason to visit the renovated theatre, see the stage from the other side and get a feel for the venue before buying tickets for the new season.

Southside Shuffle brings three days of blues, rock and jazz to Port Credit, with live music throughout Memorial Park and the village. This year’s headliners include Kim Mitchell, Blackberry Smoke and Slowhand: The Music of Eric Clapton.

Saturday is the big day, with the Street Shuffle taking over Lakeshore before performances continue into the evening. Expect live music, food, drinks and plenty happening around Port Credit.

PhilFest Sauga brings three days of Filipino culture, music, dance and food to Celebration Square. It’s free, all ages and easy to drop into, with the best window likely Saturday afternoon or evening if you want the full festival feel.

Go for the performances, then stay for Filipino food like lechon, pancit and halo halo. This is one of the bigger city centre festivals of the month, so expect crowds around the square.

Local songwriters take over The Rec Room during Mississauga Music Week. Alessia Cohle and friends are on stage, so this is the better fit if you want a seated Friday night show with stories behind the songs.

As summer winds down, music lessons can add confidence, creativity, focus, and discipline to your child’s routine, all through a fun and rewarding extracurricular activity.

Twin Fish is a Thai spot near Courtney Park with a menu that works for both quick takeout and a sit-down meal. Go for the Pad Thai with BBQ chicken and mango salad, basil fried rice, spicy Thai noodles, or Khao Soi, a northern Thai curry noodle soup with crispy noodles on top. The red snapper with basil sauce is another filling order if you want seafood.

For sharing, the Twin Fish Thai Platter gives you spring rolls, chicken and beef satay, calamari, a cold roll, shrimp chips, and dipping sauces. It’s a good table order before moving into curries, noodles, or one of the lunch plates.

Avani is a Heartland area Indian and Hakka spot for a proper group dinner. Start with palak patta chaat, a crisp spinach leaf chaat with chutneys and yogurt, or momos, which are steamed dumplings often served with a spicy sauce. Chili paneer is an easy share plate if the table wants something saucy, spicy and vegetarian.

For mains, Avani covers the familiar curries well, including butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. Rogan josh is a rich lamb curry with warm spices, while the braised lamb shank masala is better for someone who wants a heavier dinner. It works well when one table wants Indian curries, Indo Chinese dishes and plenty of vegetarian choices in the same meal.

Japanese Fish Market is listed as coming soon at 4031 The Exchange, the new downtown Mississauga development near Square One. The concept is expected to be a sushi and sake bar from the team behind Toronto's EDO Restaurants.

No opening date has been announced yet, but signage is up and the address is now public.

Why it matters: It gives City Centre another restaurant to watch in a fast growing pocket that is adding more retail, dining and rental housing beside Square One.
