This is one of those late-summer weeks where Mississauga feels busy in the best way. MuslimFest brings the big outdoor energy this weekend, while Movie Nights presented by INsauga gives you an easy evening plan before the season starts to turn.

There’s also a good run of smaller nights if you want something indoors, from local short films to stand-up. And on the local update side, Mississauga has new money for trails and a Port Credit bridge, the official election candidate list is out, and community and culture grants are open.

Competitive Rep Tryouts Are Underway

At some point, basketball stops being just another activity.

A young player starts asking to play more. They practice the same shot over and over in the driveway. After a game, they can’t wait to tell you all about it.

That’s when you start wondering: how good could this kid actually become?

Golden Eagles Basketball Academy is holding competitive Rep tryouts now and into early September, giving young players the chance to find out for themselves.

And you don’t need to know beforehand whether they are “Rep ready.” For $15, a tryout gives them the opportunity to step on the court and show what they can do.

Golden Eagles fields one Rep team at each age level, giving coaches the chance to really get to know each player, see where they can improve, and help them get there.

That support carries off the court too, with coaches placing real importance on school and the kind of person each player is becoming.

With two practices each week and at least 32 games, there are plenty of chances to see that work pay off: the shot they’ve practiced all week goes in, something that used to be hard suddenly clicks, and you get to watch them walk off the court after a big win, grinning from ear to ear.

Not ready for Rep yet? Fall Jr. NBA starts in mid-September, giving newer players a chance to learn the game, build their skills, and grow their confidence.

Sometimes all a kid needs is someone who sees what they could become and gives them the chance to prove it.

Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Jonasi brings Passport & Punchlines to Meadowvale Theatre for an adult comedy night about immigrant households, culture clashes, and growing up between worlds.

This one is for an 18+ crowd, with mature language and audience participation noted by the venue. It’s a better fit for a night out with friends than a family plan.

MuslimFest is back at Celebration Square with concerts, spoken word, comedy, films, art, workshops, a bazaar, food, and a Fun Village for kids. The festival is free and runs all weekend, with longer evening hours on Friday and Saturday.

Tonight’s free outdoor movie is the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, with Sheridan College short films playing before the main feature. The movie starts at 8 p.m., and the city says the event is weather permitting.

Bring a blanket or lawn chairs, arrive a bit early for the pre-show, and keep this as a low-cost family night before the weekend gets busy.

Frog in Hand’s Taranta closes out its Mississauga run this weekend, with 8 p.m. shows from Thursday to Saturday. The contemporary dance work draws on women’s work, memory, power, and ritual, so choose this if you want a local arts night with more movement than a standard concert.

As summer winds down, music lessons can add confidence, creativity, focus, and discipline to your child’s routine, all through a fun and rewarding extracurricular activity.

Mississauga has received $8.7 million in federal funding for active transportation projects. The money will help pay for the Culham Trail upgrades and a new pedestrian and cycling bridge in Port Credit.
